Ok, it’s November 2009 in West Palm Beach area. It’s beginning to look a little better economically out here. Only just a little bit. I feel quite qualified to make such statements. I always know before the next guy because I’m the car detailing guy.

Yes sir, I’ve long ago often said that car detailers and fitness trainers are the first professions to feel the pinch in economic slowdowns. It’s considered a luxury item. Car detailing is the first to go when a hurricane points this way on a map and is the last to come back after the cleanups, too. Well, it’s the same for recessions and depressions like this one.

Anyhow, we are doing better this past month in disposable income for personal car care cause I’m seeing, so maybe things really are getting better. That’s how I’m seeing it anyhow, and like I told you I’m usually the first to know…

1) New Car? Do not listen to your salesman who tells you that you never ever need to wax the paint because of some Space Age manufacturer’s paint shield. He is trying to be your hero and sell the car. Don’t believe me? Try to find him 3 years from now when the paint is shot and faded. I know because clients have brought me these cars with this same story for 15 years now, and I am the guy who is asked to bring the color back. There is no permanent paint shield, especially in South Florida!

2) Wax your car every 2 months/3 months TOPS, in South Florida. Soap, washing, sun, rain, and about 6 weeks time is all it takes for a waxed finish to dry out and lose it’s protective features. After that, the sun is working to degrade your paint.

3) Float off the dirt first and use clean mitts/towels. If you do not do this you will be rubbing grit and sand particles into your nice finish, which will scratch your paint.

4) If you get bugs all over your car from long drives, gently remove them somehow within the first day you see them. Their bodies release acids into the paint and most paints cant defend the pitting in the paint this causes. It’s like having car acne at this point and paint will need to be repaired. Do not use steel wool or anything hard to clean any part of painted surfaces. Use either a stiff plastic brush, or a bug sponge.

5) Same goes for bird poop. If a bird poops on your car, first track the bird and kill it, and next remove the poop as soon as possible. Depending on the bird, the bird’s diet, the time it sits there, and the strength of your paint, bird poop will damage car paint, even the stronger paints. Get it off!

6) Don’t park in sprinklers range. Most sprinkler water is very hard and continuous disregard will result in mineral deposit stains, which have to be removed with a tedious process above and beyond the price of an ordinary detail. I charge $10 per panel for mineral deposit removal.

7) If you see painters with scaffolds and sprayers painting your condo/home, or at an office you’re visiting, park as far away from them as possible. I can also remove most paint from your car at $10 per panel, but I bet you can’t and it’s not easy.

If you love your car and the optimal state of your paint is a concern, stop grabbing the close parking spots in front of stores and offices. Park out further, walk the little walk and enjoy that you won’t get all the careless door dings from …people who just must get the close parking spots. Typically, these are older people who aren’t too healthy of mind or body and they tend to just fling their doors open into your black Mercedes doors. It is what it is.
